Suscinio castle

SuscinioSarzeau

Now the property of the Morbihan department this castle was one of the best-loved places of the Dukes of Brittany and their court from the 13th to the 15th centuries. Today the impressive fortress stands in the middle of the marshes next to the ocean. As we can see it now the castle looks like a large 15th century residence.

From the inside yard we can see two main buildings, six towers and two ramparts. The castle is surrounded by moats with a draw-bridge. Besides the memories of its royal inhabitants, three exhibitions are presented in the main building.
Two permanent exhibitions :
30 000 medieval pavements from the chapel floors outside. Dated from the years 1330-1350, they have various patterns: vegetals, fancy characters, monsters... A unique heritage in Europe.
The history of the castle and of its 30 years of renovation.
